He starts telling a story about how he once got lost at the age of eight in a peak in Nepal (who lets an eight-year old climb a mountain solo anyway?), but the guide, a kid like him, just smiled and said it was OK. We see a dude talking to the camera about how he thinks the coolest guys are those who could keep a smile on their faces during tough times. Unnoticed, the mummy slowly moves his hand. Inside, they find a mummified body: wait, mummies in Japan? One of the students worries about an inscription saying something to the effect of "touch this and you will be cursed", but the professor leading the expedition brushes it off. They're about to open the sarcophagus, with all sorts of electronic equipment recording the scene. A group of Japanese researchers are in an archeological dig, apparently. The sigil appears once again, but this time a gloved hand is touching it. The words "A New Hero, A New Legend" flash over and under the title: makes sense, given that this was KR's reboot for the new generation. I like the costume, it looks good without being too flashy. KUUGA! Our Rider is seen fighting in a burning church, the other outfits show up, we see Kuuga jumping on his bike and kicking monster ass. We also get a look at a love interest-looking girl and a SERIOUS BUSINESS man in a longcoat. Opening! Joe Odagiri is our main character, looks like, playing a certain Yuusuke Godai. The lid closes, and a hand touches the sigil engraved on it. We see a red-eyed warrior fighting off several humanoid monsters, changing outfits with every cut (or maybe they're different warriors, hard to tell) After fighting the monsters, the warrior walks up a stair, and then he proceeds to fall down a greenish portal, only to land on a sarcophagus. The camera is a little off-focus and grainy, making things difficult to make out. So, hoping that the subs continue until the end, here it goes!Ī dedicatory to the late Shotaro Ishinomori, the requisite "don't watch this in a dark room" disclaimer, and strange symbols open the episode. A new group started fansubbing it (people say Kuuga's subs never go beyond the tenth episode for some reason), so I decided that this would be a good place to start, especially after watching a certain clip on Youtube where the main character delivers one hell of a beatdown. Now, one of the series people kept recommending to KR newcomers was Kamen Rider Kuuga, the first of the "Heisei" Rider series and the one that restarted the franchise after some ten years of dormancy. I mean, I could tell it sucked, and I was like what, ten years old? I also caught a random episode of the new adaptation, CommonKamen Rider Dragon Knight, but it didn't get me. There's been an upsurge in toku threads in 4chan's /m/ recently, which is pretty cool (minus 4chan's requisite trolling of stuff, of course) They're mostly about Kamen Rider, a series the only experience I have with is the execrable Saban's Masked Rider, which sucked ass badly.
